Design and principle of action

The bactericidal lamp is a type of low-pressure gas discharge lamp. Its main elements:

  • a cylindrical (tubular) glass bulb, the walls of which are covered from the inside with a thin layer of mercury or amalgam;
  • a metal base with contact pins, which is inserted into the lamp, is bactericidal;
  • electrodes located inside the bulb.

When voltage is applied to the contacts of the base from the mains or an autonomous power source, a discharge occurs between the electrodes and causes the glow of mercury vapor, and the glass transmits the radiation of the ultraviolet spectrum. Bactericidal lamps are sometimes called quartz lamps, but the correct name is UV lamps. Both types of lamps are used for disinfection, but their glass differs in composition and throughput. Due to special additives, Uvioleve has transparency only for ultraviolet rays of a certain length, and retains most of the UV spectrum. Its composition has been repeatedly improved, today you can buy bactericidal lamps that transmit mainly rays with a wavelength of 253.7 nm. Such radiation:

  • has high bactericidal activity, that is, it destroys pathogenic organisms and prevents their reproduction;
  • unlike hard ultraviolet, when exposed to air, it does not cause the formation of ozone, a gas that provokes increased formation of free radicals in the body.

Ozone-free bactericidal lamps are popular in Kyiv due to their ease of use, after operation of open irradiators there is no need to ventilate the room. And recirculators, which use bactericidal lamps, can generally be turned on in the presence of people and pets.
